Who are our guests?

Gregor and Monica are my mentors, and my dear teachers, I am happy to introduce them to you :

Monica has luminous teaching, her voice makes the chant of mantras a delight, I thank her for her generosity, and also for making everything she teaches sacred. She guides us towards a deeper connection with our innermost core, the heart, and to connect with our true nature. She teaches us to create more space in our body and thus to create more conscious connections with each part of it. She also conveys her kindness and inspires my daily teaching.

Thank you, Moni, from the bottom of my soul.”

“ Gregor has an ability to explain complex concepts in a clear and simple way to understand. He analyzes the various existing shastras on a specific subject and gives them in his books a complete and clear analysis. It has always impressed me with clarity of intelligence and generosity in its sharing of knowledge. His work is a major contribution to the world of yoga. He guides my sadhana and my study.

Thank you, Gregor, from the bottom of my heart for your generosity in sharing and listening, your eyes on my practice and your answers to all my questions.”

For those who do not yet know them: They met in 1995, each on their first trip to India to study Ashtanga Yoga. They were both authorised by K Pattabhi Jois* in 1996-7. In 1999 they left the Jois community to dedicate their learning and teaching to restore Ashtanga Yoga to its original tradition of a holistic eight-limbed yoga practise.

Gregor Maehle is the international author of nine textbooks covering all eight limbs of yoga. He is a mystic and a profuse blog writer covering topics on yoga and beyond. He travels the globe educating with passion, humour, insight and wisdom.

He began his practice of Raja Yoga in 1978 and added Hatha Yoga a few years later. In the mid-1980s he commenced annual travels to India, where he studied with various yogic and tantric masters, traditional Indian sadhus and ascetics. After practising with BKS Iyengar he spent fourteen months in Mysuru, and in 1997 was authorised to teach Ashtanga Yoga by K. Pattabhi Jois*. In India Gregor also received eight months of mostly one-on-one instruction in scripture and the higher limbs of Yoga through B.N.S. Iyengar, a student of T. Krishnamacharya. He also studied Sanskrit under Professor Narayanachar and Dr Chandrasekhar. He lived for several years as a recluse, studying Sanskrit and yogic scripture and practising yogic techniques.

Since then he has branched out into researching the anatomical alignment of postures and the higher limbs of yoga. He gained his anatomical knowledge through a Health Practitioner degree and has also studied history, philosophy and comparative religion at the university level.

Monica Gauci brings her vast knowledge and experience as a Yoga Therapist, a trained Chiropractor and 47 years of personal yoga practice to these topics. Her work and insights as a therapist make her workshops powerfully relevant. Her teaching is inspired by her passion to educate others to empower them to be able to heal and care for themselves.

Monica began her practice of yoga in 1978, closely followed by a dedicated meditation practice. She practiced Hatha Yoga and then Iyengar Yoga for 13 years until she discovered Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga in 1993. After multiple journeys to Mysuru, India in 1996 she was authorised to teach Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga by K. Pattabhi Jois.*

Since the age of 24, Monica has studied many different disciplines of the Healing Arts. In 2008 she graduated with 1st class honours as a Doctor of Chiropractic and received numerous awards for Academic Excellence.

Monica continues her studies in anatomy and movement as well as manual, movement, yoga and mantra therapies. Her education as a Rehabilitative Chiropractor inspires her teaching and application of movement principles that support and promote a healthy body.

Monica is a registered Yoga Therapist with the Australian Association of Yoga Therapists and a full member of the International Association of Yoga Therapists. She is registered at the highest level with both Yoga Alliance and Yoga Australia. Monica has published Ashtanga Yoga Beginners Course Manual for Teachers and is a contributing author to Ashtanga Yoga, Practice and Philosophy and Ashtanga Yoga, The Intermediate Series in the areas of asana, anatomy, injury prevention and therapy.

*In the wake of the MeToo movement information surfaced regarding KP Jois’ sexual assault and abuse. Please read Gregor’s statement and Monica’s statement.

Detail agenda

Gregor will teach :

  • Led Ashtanga class with heaps of technical details

Gregor  analyses the many intricate anatomical details of major postures of the Primary Series. The focus is on breaking down the various phases of entering and exiting the postures into their constituents. Performing postures safely while understanding which anatomical actions will get us deep into the asanas will prevent unnecessary energy expenditure. Through inducing precision this format also achieves that conditioning and emotions lodged in bodily tissue are released, preparing us for the higher limbs of pranayama and meditation.

  • The Love of Wisdom – Yoga Sutra and Sanskrit Chanting,

”The Yoga Sutra entered my life 39 years ago and since then it’s been a constant companion. It took me a long time to completely understand it but once this had happened it ended all confusion I had about yoga. Understanding the Sutra gave me complete confidence in how to apply my practices diligently and that I would succeed in due time. The Sutra changed yoga for me from a faith and hope-based system to a science with predictable and repeatable outcomes. It is exactly this confidence and certainty that I would like to pass on to my students.”

Gregor

The Yoga Sutra is a tool to gain inner freedom. Inner freedom means to be able to
dictate our mind what to do, what it needs to
think or when it should be quiet rather than our
mind bossing us around. Studying the Yoga Sutra is a training that teaches you to use your mind in
the same efficient and creative way as asana is a training to use your body. For this purpose
we need to be able to understand and free us from our conditioning (vasana). You will
understand how conditioning is created by your past thoughts, words and actions and how to change future conditioning by changing your present thoughts, words and actions.

Another important goal of Yoga Sutra is the integration of meditative experiences
or glimpses into our life. We may have had great experiences of happiness but without their proper integration, apart from the actual moment of experience, they are often not of lasting value. The Yoga Sutra helps us to put them into perspective and integrate them into our lives, leading to lasting change.

Monica will teach :

  • Creating postural harmony

‘Good’ Posture, From the Inside Out, Breath, Core &. Spine Integration

What is good posture? Perhaps it is not what we imagine…

Good posture is that which allows us to breath freely, where our relationship to gravity is easeful, gracious and harmonious. Just as our breath changes with our feelings, thoughts and beliefs, so our posture adapts to reflect these. Problems arise when we become stuck in one pattern and

unconsciously carry it around as our ‘signature’ posture. This workshop aims to reveal our unconscious patterns and offers corrective and therapeutic exercises to keep us nimble and adaptive to the rainbow of changes that life presents, that we are better informed and equipped to change what we think and how we feel to heal ourselves.

  • Mantra and chanting are integrated into each Workshop appropriate to the topic being taught.
